Teaching Moments - 24 Gold Coins

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By John Bishop A man I know was given six months to live, yet his outlook on life was inspiring. I asked how he could stay so positive knowing he only had a short time to live. He shared these thoughts with me. Each day when I wake up I receive twenty-four gold coins, one for each hour of the day. I have to spend some of those coins for eating, sleeping, time with my family, and taking care of the days responsibilities. I choose to spend some of my daily hours (coins) having fun and helping others. At the end of each day there are usually a couple of special gold coins left over. I spend these with particular care. What an invaluable life lesson for us and our children. We live in a hectic, there is never enough time to get everything done world. Our future success, and that of our children, will be determined by how wisely we invest our daily gold coins. Suggestions for implementation: Some ideas for spending your special gold coins include: 1. Helping someone without being asked 2. Starting a new book or project that you have been meaning to get to. 3. Spending an extra thirty minutes a day on homework Questions for discussion: 1. How did you spend your gold coins yesterday? Today? 2. Discuss with your family how you might spend your coins more wisely. Please visit www.TeachingMoments.com for more life skills ideas. Ground Cover Junipers-The Green Mound Juniper-Juniperus Procumbens Nana

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Lawrence Dyer The Green Mound Juniper is an exciting and versatile ground cover juniper despite the rather uninspiring name by which it is known (in North America at least). The term “Green Mound Juniper” does describe the plant in a basic way, but gives nothing away about its twisting wiry branches and neat silvery-green foliage. This low growing juniper with its tiny spiky leaves makes a picturesque and rugged shape that makes it ideal for growing alongside paving or steps. In the latter case it will tumble in neat cascades down the side of the steps. Its trailing stems are relatively short and neat when compared to other low growing junipers such as the Juniperus horizontalis cultivars. Such is its admirable form that the Green Mound Juniper is one of the most popular junipers for garden use in North America and Europe. It is even used for bonsai, when its stiff stem is trained up to form a tree-like trunk from which the side branches naturally fan out horizontally. It is not a particularly fast-growing Juniper, nevertheless it is possible to have a good-looking bonsai tree in just a few short years. Unlike many junipers, the Green Mound Juniper does not change its colour much throughout the year, remaining an attractive silvery-green or sage-green both summer and winter. In some exposed spots it may take on a slightly bronzed colour during the winter. After ten years growth you can expect the Green Mound Juniper to have covered an area of about 1 1/2 square metres under reasonable growing conditions. This means that it is not going to romp away and smother your other alpine beauties, but will remain a neat and highly desirable conifer from the beginning. Like other junipers the Green Mound is easy to grow. Well-drained soil, into which some organic material has been dug, is ideal. It does not like a water-logged spot, nor will it like the large leaves of herbaceous plants or shrubs growing over it and crowding out its light. If you have a large area of paving beside an alpine garden or rock garden then several Green Mound Junipers dotted around the edges and eventually perhaps meeting up would be very effective, allowing one or two to grow further back within the area of the alpine garden to give a more natural, scattered effect. Alternatively the Green Mound Juniper looks good in a contemporary garden with areas of cobbles and other textured surfaces, combining well with metal and glass, and plants such as phormium (New Zealand flax) and various low-growing thymes. Overall, the Green Mound Juniper is not a plant that any wild garden, heather or alpine scree should be without! Independent Review Organizations Meets State Managed Care Regulations

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Skip_Freedman] Skip Freedman When it comes to patient care, licensing and certification, and credentialing of their providers, managed care organizations are called upon to meet rigorous state regulations. Independent Review Organizations ease their burden by providing managed care organizations (Managed Care Organization) with a flexible means for outsourcing their medical reviews and pre-authorizations to an entity which is capable of providing credentialed, state-licensed physicians for all specialties and subspecialties. Increasingly this is important as organizations work across state lines to provide pre-authorizations for expensive and complex treatments and manage patient populations in a several states. An Independent Review Organization provides great value because it can work across states lines and is set up to recruit and credential specialists in multiple states to meet state regulatory requirements more easily than an Managed Care Organization can. This is why an increasing number of Managed Care Organizations turn to Independent Review Organizations for outsourcing their preauthorization approvals to get specialty matches of complex and costly medical treatments. Whether its for group health, workers comp, disability Third Party Administrators, re-insurers or self-insured organizations, an Independent Review Organization provides the flexibility to respond to the complexity of state regulations. 10 Tips on Losing Weight Fast

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Kathryn Whittaker Before jumping into a diet, you must determine your ideal weight. This will be your guide on your weight loss journey. Fast weight loss doesnt imply that you drop 50 pounds overnight; a few pounds can take months to shed and for obese individuals, it can take years to lose the desired amount of weight. How fast you lose weight will depend on how focused you are on your diet. Here are some simple steps to help you lose weight: 1. Before dieting, you must know how many calories you normally need in a day. If you are sedentary, multiply your weight (in pounds) by fifteen. If you are moderately active, multiply your weight by seventeen; if you are active, multiply your weight by twenty. This will give you the average calorie intake you need per day. 2. Remember to eat your fruits and veggies! You need at least five servings of them per day doing this will put you on the right track to a healthy body, because fruits and vegetables have beneficial fibers, vitamins and antioxidants. They also fill up your stomach fast so that you dont overeat and take into many calories. 3. Monitor the quantity of food you eat. Avoid high-calorie foods and eat in small portions. A helpful tip is to chew your food slowly because this makes digestion easy on your body and you will also be less likely to overeat. 4. Dont skip meals. When you want to lose weight it may be tempting to starve yourself but eating small amounts of food frequently can help you maintain a healthy, balanced calorie intake throughout the day. Also, your blood sugar level will be adversely affected if you dont eat often. You can even divide the standard allotment of three meals into five or six smaller meals. 5. Fresh fruits and vegetables are ideal packaged and processed foods have high sodium and fat content. You are more likely to lose weight if you eat naturally fresh foods. 6. Dont limit your food intake too much. Go ahead and indulge yourself; eat your favorite treat. Its okay to have that slice of birthday cake at the occasional party. Just make sure to eat in moderation and use those special desserts as rewards, instead of enemies, to your weight loss experience. 7. Dont always believe everything you read on a food label. Fat free does not necessarily mean low calories. The same wisdom goes for foods that boast low sugar or low carbs. Glance over the nutrition label there youll find the calorie count. 8. Try to limit the number of juices and sugary beverages you drink. Instead, drink eight glasses water a day this flushes out your bodys toxins and waste. 9. If possible, keep a food journal. This will help you keep track of your calorie intake and will be a daily reminder of the types of foods you need. 10. Dont forget to exercise! Thirty to sixty minutes of physical activity a day will ensure your health and help you lose weight (and not to mention, firm up those muscles). Weight-bearing exercises are especially great ways to burn those pesky calories. 5 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism for Weight Loss

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Craig Ballantyne Even if you are convinced that you are cursed with a slow metabolism, you can do something about it. In fact, basic lifestyle changes can give you a revved up metabolism capable of burning a lot more fat and calories 24 hours a day. And your metabolism does not have to suck just because you are over 30. I am often asked if there is anything that can be done about the decrease in metabolism that happens as we age. Well, the following tips will help you increase your metabolism as much as possible. Eating properly and exercising can keep your metabolism at optimal levels for several decades - you are never too old to lose fat, gain muscle, and get lean. 1. Interval training This type of exercise is far superior to traditional cardio for boosting metabolism. Once you stop moderate aerobic training, your metabolism quickly returns to normal. But the turbulence from interval training helps your body burn more calories for hours after the workout. 2. Gain muscle and lose fat. Now while it is true that putting on muscle mass will help your metabolism at rest, it is NOT true that each pound of muscle will help burn an extra 50 calories per day. That is a pipe dream. But having more muscle will allow you to exercise harder and create more turbulence in your body. Plus, muscle looks good on men and women. 3. Eat more protein. No surprise here, bodybuilders have known this for a long time and have been using protein to help them achieve their lean bodies. A recent study showed that a high-protein, low-carbohydrate shake led to a greater increase in metabolism than a low-protein, high-carbohydrate drink. Scott, C., and R. Devore. Diet-induced thermogenesis: variations among three isocaloric meal-replacement shakes. Nutrition 21: 874-877, 2005. 4. Don’t starve yourself or skip meals to lose weight. Reducing your food intake could lead to a slower metabolism. That will stop your fat loss program and will lead to rapid weight re-gain when you return to a normal eating pattern. 5. Eat 6-8 mini-meals per day, rather than 2-3 large meals. A new study showed that eating 6 times per day was associated with eating fewer calories per day, lowering cholesterol levels, and lowering post-meal insulin levels. Eating several small meals per day might even help you burn more calories. I recommend combining an increased meal frequency with an increased protein and fiber intake. That’s a guaranteed way to lose fat and gain muscle. I cover how to make these changes in Get Lean, my most advanced fat loss manual. Farshchi, H., et al. Beneficial metabolic effects of regular meal frequency on dietary thermogenesis, insulin sensitivity, and fasting lipid profiles in healthy obese women. Amer. J. Clin. Nutr. 81: 16-24, 2005. Do all of these simple steps and you’ll increase your metabolism and succeed on your weight loss program. Backyard Bird–The Catbird

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Gary Machado It’s quiet now. Gone is the constant chatter, whistles and meowing sounds as you jump from branch to branch safeguarding your territory against all trespassers. Gone too is the uniform gray body offset with the black cap and tail feathers, with just a smidgen of rust coloration under the tail coverts, that allows you to blend in with your natural habitat of dense udergrowth and thickets. They call you a skulker, a bird hard to see in the dense underbrush. Usually heard but now seen. Definitely NOT a backyard bird. Except in my backyard. Maybe it’s because my back yard is filled with trees and dense undergrowth along the rear and side fences.Or maybe it’s because there is a wooded area of trees and underbrush in the low-lying parcel of land across the street. Or maybe it’s because of a reason I can’t fully understand. I know you don’t stay becasue of my bird feeders, because you don’t have birdseed in you diet. You prefer insects, spiders and fruit berries instead. But whatever the reason, I’m grateful. I’m grateful that you have chosen my yard as your place to breed and have chicks. And not just this year. But last year too. Definitely unusual. I’m delighted to watch you jump and fly from one low hanging branch to another, or from one small tree to another, constantly chattering or meowing your right of territory. But I never did get to see your mate’s nest. You never led me there. So I don’t know how many chicks you fledged and whether they all survived. But it’s late summer now. And it’s quiet again. Are you already heading south on your long migration journey? To southern Florida? Or Texas? Or even to eastern Mexico? I understand that for this trip, you’ve teamed up with some other catbirds, so that you are in a group of a dozen or so. For protection? For guidance? Whatever the reason, I hope your migration south and your return next year is successful. I would really like it if you or one of your chicks return to my yard. I look forward to your whistles and meowing as you defend your territory and build your nest. But until next year, “skulker” catbird, Goodbye… Gary Machado has been a field and backyard birdwatcher for over 30 years. How Don Juan DeMarco Can Teach Men How to Attract Women

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

By Teddy Shabba Don Juan DeMarco is a movie about a man who truly believes that he is Don Juan the greatest lover the world has ever known. Men who want to learn how to attract women can learn a lot by watching and modeling Don Juan Demarco. The very first scene has Johnny Depp who plays Don Juan dressed in 17th century garb and at first appears is taking place in the 17th century, yet it takes place in modern day. Don Juan is comfortable with who he is even if the women with whom he is with are not. When you make a woman enter your reality and refuse anything else youalso control the outcome since anywhere she goes in your reality is new for her. When talking to a woman instead of telling her what he is going to do to her, he tells her what happens when a man really knows how to make love with a woman. When he also takes her hand and begins demonstrating the whole process he not only uses it as an anchor but allows her to become comfortable with his touch and actually begin to crave it even more. All of this occurs in the first 10 or so minutes of the movie and if you were to watch only the first ten minutes of the movie you would have more than enough to learn about attracting women. Throughout the movie Don Juan understands that he in a different reality than the one in which he perceives, however, all the women in the movie are more than happy to live in his reality rather than there own even if only for a moment. Don Juan’s recognition that a woman is beautiful no matter what others think is a very important point as well. Many times men don’t go after a woman they find attractive not because they don’t want to but because they fear what others might say. When you realize that what you like is what you like and nobody’s opinion matters but yours, you will find a door open to women that you might not otherwise have known. Overall this is a great movie for men to gain an understanding of what it takes to attract women. When a man perceives his own reality to be very high women will naturally be attracted to him because what he has to offer is something much more exciting or different than anything in there own reality, even if the only difference is in the perception. While it is not necessary to go to the extreme of a Don Juan, I am sure you can find things in your own reality in which you can make the perception much greater than the reality. Getting Past Major Learning Barriers

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Kevin Eikenberry Tom stepped into the meeting room, but from his perspective it might as well have been a jail cell. He was a prisoner in his own work day. Why? The PowerPoint slide projected on the screen said it all. Welcome to our Refresher Training. Refresher training might be needed for some people but Tom already knew all this material . . . but the training was mandatory. Besides, he had a desk full of more important work. He told himself how stupid this mandatory training policy was; that he hated to attend training on stuff he knew. Marys supervisor asked her to attend the coaching skills training being provided by the company. The problem was that Mary wasnt a coach. She wasnt even a supervisor. She didnt see any value in attending this workshop. All she could think about was, What good is this going to be for me? Kat was really excited about the workshop session she had registered for. It was on a topic she was interested in and wanted to learn more about. She saw how mastering these skills would help her reach her goals. She arrived early and sat close to the front. The problem became clear very early on though. The material was too basic. She already knew this stuff! She was disappointed to say the least. She put out her own money and time for something that was going to waste both of those things. Im guessing you can relate to at least one, and perhaps all of the scenarios youve just read. These are just some of the common barriers that get in our way of being the most productive learners: we are forced to be there, we dont see the learning as relevant or valuable, and we feel like we already know the material. While these barriers are real, there are things we can do to jump over or break through these barriers to make the time invested in these situations more valuable and useful to us. Here are three specific suggestions that will help you in each of these situations and many more. 1. Use the time to review and focus. So you dont want to be there, or feel that you already know the material. So what? You are there. So be there (and get over yourself)! Rather than having your own little pity party, or being cynical about the material and the experience, use the time to review what you know. Use the time as an opportunity to do some thinking. Reflect on your experiences with these concepts. Think of ways you can improve on what you already know. You may become a valuable resource to other learners, or you may learn something new through your reflection. The time is there, use it wisely. Even if what you learn is different than what others learn, you will have made good use of your time, improved your mood and outlook, and taken something valuable from your time spent. 2. Look for the nugget. Everyone can learn something new. Maybe you do know much of the material being covered. If that is the case, be a detective. Look for and uncover at least one nugget that you had forgotten, that you have stopped applying, or one twist on something you already know well. Often one well applied nugget will pay for your time invested many times over. And without sleuthing, it is value you would never have received. 3. Be a beginner. Remember what it is like when you first learn something new? You are excited, interested and having fun. Once we think we know it all, we stop looking for any evidence to prove ourselves wrong. One of the best ways to remove all of these barriers is to come to any learning situation as a beginner, by asking yourself, What can I learn? The Zen saying states it well, In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the experts mind there are few. Give yourself more options. View the world from a possibility perspective. Come to the learning table as a beginner. These three suggestions can have a major impact on the value you get from any learning experience (classroom or otherwise). Once you know and apply these strategies these common barriers to your learning will be a thing of the past. And youll get more value out of all your future learning experiences. Emotional Affair Warning Sign #1 - “But We’re Just Friends”

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Jeff Herring Emotional affairs are in many ways more difficult to spot than physical affairs. An emotional affair can look just like a friendship to outsiders. An emotional affair is much easier to deny than a physical affair, especially to yourself. “We’re just friends” can be deadly words “But we’re just friends” can be some of the most deadly words in a relationship. This is because if you have caught yourself thinking or saying, “but we’re just friends” you are probably already in trouble. You see the journey to an emotional affair is a very slippery slope. Most people do not start out seeking to complicate their lives and mess up their love relationship by seeking out an emotional affair. I’ve heard so many people say “well, it just sorta happened.” Sorry, you don’t get to say that one. You may not have intended to end up in an emotional or even a full blown physical affair. But each step of the way was a decision you made, a choice to go down a certain road. When you catch yourself thinking “we’re just friends” or having to defend yourself to others by saying “we’re just friends” you have already started the process of rationalizing to yourself behavior and choices that you know are not acceptable. If you are doubting this point, just take the word rationalize and spell it just a little differently: Rational lies. Rational lies you tell others. Rational lies you tell yourself.
